About this event

What does decolonisation mean in the context of Higher Education (HE) today? How should we understand the relationship between decolonial theory and practice? And what challenges and possibilities exist within decolonial praxis for structural as well as institutional transformation?

Join us for an online Q&A with Dr Adam Elliot-Cooper (QMUL) and Dr Amit Singh (Manchester), where we will delve into these critical questions and more on the politics, problems and potential of decolonisation in HE. The event will be held over Zoom, with semi-structured conversation between the speakers and hosts for the first hour, followed by open discussion with and among participants.

This event is hosted by the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Team at York St John University (YSJU) as part of a six-part mini-series, titled ‘Discussing Decolonisation’, taking place over the course of 2023-24. You can read more about our intentions for the series and community expectations here.

Information about upcoming events in the series will be shared both internally at YSJU and externally across the sector, with booking required for each individual event via Eventbrite. Please note that the next two events will take place at the YSJU campus, in York.

Guest Speakers:

Adam Elliott-Cooper is a lecturer in social and public policy in the School of Politics and IR, Queen Mary University of London. He is author of Black Resistance to British Policing (2021). He sits on the board of The Monitoring Group.

Amit Singh is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow based in the Sociology department at the University of Manchester. He is the author of Fighting Identity (2022) and, since 2017, has delivered a 25-week supplementary sociology enrichment curriculum – "Race, Class & Society" – for sixth formers in South London.
