Event description
Kids of Colour and NPMP: Dismantling The School-To-Prison Pipeline

About this Event

In the UK, we are following in the USA's footsteps as our school-to-prison pipeline becomes abundantly clear. Zero tolerance policies are in full effect, isolation booths are becoming the norm and both Greater Manchester and London are committed to placing police officers in schools. Meanwhile, those deemed 'too disruptive' find themselves banished from the books. But who is being affected?

In 2019, The Timpson Review evidenced that black Caribbean and mixed white and black Caribbean pupils are more likely to experience permanent expulsion than their white counterparts. This is particularly concerning when Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons found that more than half of the inmates held in prisons for young people in England and Wales are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. Once again, institutional racism and classism cannot be ignored.

We must act to both dismantle the pipeline and to reform education in its entirety.

Join us on Tuesday the 25th February as Kids of Colour and Northern Police Monitoring Project host 'Dismantling The School-To-Prison Pipeline'. Hear from representatives from No More Exclusions, NPMP and Kids of Colour, as well as Dr Karen Graham (MMU), whose work asks 'Does school prepare men for prison?'
