Disruptive Demo: Top Hat
Wed, 10 Feb 2016, 10:30 – Tue, 16 Feb 2016, 12:00 GMT
Due to demand, we have added two new Top Hat disruptive demo sessions:
- Wednesday, February 10th (10:30am-noon)
- Tuesday, February 16th (10:30am-noon)
Both sessions will take place in the “Teaching” room at the DMLL (Library, 3rd floor)
If you have a mobile device- please bring it! (mobile phone, smartphone, iPad or Android tablet, laptop, or other internet-capable device). There will also be a limited number of iPads on hand.
What is Top Hat?
It’s a flexible and fun web-based service, which makes it simple for lecturers to engage with their students via questions, activities, and content. Students can use their own mobile phones, tablets, or laptops- no clickers!
You can use Top Hat in a lot of ways:
- an audience response/voting system, to help class time be more dynamic and responsive
- presenting slides or content in real-time, directly onto students' screens so they can follow along
- getting in-class feedback and discussion, even anonymously, to help you engage those quiet students
- release asynchronous content and questions as "homework" or for revision, on a designed-for-mobile platform
- & more
Lecturers at Coventry University who are already using Top Hat are praising it- some of them even enthuse at length! Their students are more engaged from lecture to tutorial, and are more willing to share and discuss. It's enabled the lecturers to have a better connection with students, and be more responsive and effective in teaching sessions. It's so easy to set up and use, but can result in a big impact.
No Cost to Staff and Students at Coventry University
The Faculty of Engineering, Environment, & Computing has funded a university-wide site license for Top Hat through October 2016. This means it is free to use by ALL university staff and students! EEC is very excited about Top Hat, and we hope you will be too.
Disruptive Demo Sessions
These sessions are face-to-face, hands-on events! Amanda Hardy from EEC will be facilitating the session, showing examples, and sharing the way EEC staff are already using Top Hat to great effect. She’s eager to show you the system, get you to participate, and chat about just what it can offer you.
If you're interested but can't attend a session:
There is a 2-sided handout you can download which outlines Top Hat's main features and benefits. It's a great summary of information.
You are welcome to sign up for a "Professor" account and create a course at any time:
Start at http://tophat.com and sign up using your Coventry University email address. Top Hat has great support guides and resources! Once you’ve made a course, start at the little “? Guides” link in the bottom-left of the screen.
You can also enter Amanda’s demo Top Hat course by visiting https://app-ca.tophat.com/e/333355 (click the blue button to “create anonymous account”) – you’ll see some example materials and questions from the point of view of a student. It doesn’t accurately represent the “live” experience though!
Amanda has begun creating a Top Hat area in the Moodle Staff Support page – to access it, log in to Moodle, then click here. (Or, in the grey menu bar near the top click “Tools > Top Hat Classroom Response”)
Please contact Amanda Hardy with any questions regarding this mailing! email@example.com
