Event description

Description

At a time when ethno-nationalism and white identity politics are rising, “whiteness” is being reaffirmed along rigid and fixed lines, with Richard Spencer famously discussing the need to create a “white homeland”. But who would be allowed into this homeland? There is no homogenous white community and such thinking (from both anti-racists and racists) negates the ways in which ostensibly white communities have at times been subject to racism and genocide.

We must always remember that race as we know it is a euro-colonial invention and whiteness was a part of that. It was positioned at the top of a hierarchy of so-called races that often served to delineate the human from the sub-human - used to justify both conquest and genocide. But even in that context, who got to enjoy the trappings of whiteness? And what utility did whiteness serve?

With this in mind, we ask, what does it mean to be white and where does whiteness come from? We will also discuss how useful it is to talk about“whiteness” as a blanket term. More broadly we will explore how can we challenge racism and colonial racial logic without recreating it as well as positing where so-called white people fit into our vision for anti-racist solidarity.

All this and much more will be discussed across two panels. Speakers TBC.

This event will take place on the 18th of March from 1.00 pm at Birkbeck’s Malet Street campus in room B34. As always if you would like to attend but can’t afford a ticket please contact consenteduk@gmail.com
