Diversity and inclusion in tech

With The Federation and Oscar Technology

We’re bringing together some of the most prominent minds in Diversity in Manchester to create an outcome led series of workshops looking at three themes: Education, Recruitment and Retention.

This is ‘not just another diversity in tech event’ - We don’t just want to raise awareness of the challenges faced, we want to progress the conversation and have a tangible output and we need your help to do it!

  • Do you work in HR at a tech business?

  • Do you work in tech education?

  • Do you run a digital agency?

  • Are you a freelancer looking to scale?

  • Are you passionate and/or knowledgable about inclusion?

Help us shape the future of Diversity in Tech 6pm - 9pm at The Federation 5th, 10th and 16th of April 2018

  • Thursday 5th April: Tech Education and Diversity: How do we increase the pool of diverse people wanting to work in STEM?

  • Tuesday 10th April: Creating an inclusive recruitment strategy: How do we recruit a functional, inclusive and naturally diverse tech team?

  • Monday 16th April: Retaining and growing diverse talent: How do we create a workplace that intrinsically nurtures the needs of a diverse workforce?

Who's involved?

Lots of people! We've tried to engage with as many people as possible, below are just a few. More to be added. You'll meet these people helping run the workshops, and on our panels. Hopefully all attendees at this event will be a part of this project ongoing.

Luce Carter - is a proudly neurodiverse software developer at the BBC. When not writing code she can be found running the local Xamarin User Group or speaking at events about neurodiversity or mobile apps

Vimla Appadoo - is a Service Designer who uses Human Centred Design to facilitate change in the public sector. Vim speaks nationally and internationally about topics that she is passionate about such as tech4good, social impact and inclusivity.

Kim Witten - has a PhD in Sociolinguistics, focusing on language and identity online. She currently works as a User Experience Researcher at Sage UK

Harry Bailey - Co-founder of Human

Anna Holland-Smith -  is a Software Engineer at the BBC, a former criminal defence lawyer, and an advocate for improving industry accessibility and inclusivity through her work with organisations such as CodeFirst:Girls and CodeYourFuture

Sam Mikkelsen - Client Solutions Director for Oscar Technology. He's responsible for developing Oscar's existing client relationships as well as ensuring new clients receive the best solutions. Sam initiaties new service lines and has a strategic view of all things recruitment, making sure Oscar is at the bleeding edge of recruitment innovation.

Rebecca Rae-Evans - Pro social digital strategist. Looking after digital ethics at The Federation. Co-founder and host of Tech for Good Live podcasts and events

FAQs

How to get here? We're right by Victoria Station and Shudehill tram stop.
Is it accessible? There are accessible entrances (The Pioneer cafe entrance on Dantzic street is best) and toilets.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to get into the event? Nah, your name is all good.
Do I have to bring anything to the event? Just yourself and your thoughts. Feel free to do some thinking or research before hand or bring notes.
Can I attend more than one event? We would love that.
Can I invite people? Please do! Bring anyone who you think will be able to contribute or would have an interest. Make sure they sign up so we have an idea of who's coming and numbers. We need to know for the workshop element and food.
I don't know anything about diversity, should I still come? Yes please.
Will there be food? There will be something to keep everyone going. (Vegan options too!) but the Pioneer coffee shop will also be open if you want to purchace more food or drink.
