Professor Peter Holland looks at the role of genetics and development in animal diversity and evolution.

About this Event

Evening talk by University Professor, Peter Holland, looking at how DNA sequencing has changed our view of the evolutionary tree of animals and revealed some of the molecular processes underpinning animal diversification. Darwin was convinced that the shape of the evolutionary tree could be solved – but not in his lifetime. He was right, and it was only very recently that scientists started to agree on who was most closely related to whom in the animal kingdom.

Professor Peter Holland is the Linacre Professor of Zoology at the University of Oxford. Professor Holland’s research focuses on how the evolution of animal diversity can be explained through evolution of the genome. His research has focused on the evolution of mammals, molluscs, moths and marine invertebrates. He is the author of ‘The Animal Kingdom: A Very Short Introduction’ (Oxford University Press), now translated into several languages.
