Abstract/Summary: As is the case with virtually every industry, the issue of equitable representation has become a chief concern in the medical field. As different communities and disciplines begin to reflect on their role in the pervasive Western-history-worldview, the personal, social, and societal impact from a lack of diverse perspectives has become apparent. As medical illustration is the art of conveying medical concepts, it too has a history of bias in favour of the 'false default" of a white male perspective. From diagrams to health outcomes, efforts are now being made to redress the balance and give skin of all tones the attention it deserves.

Bio: Dr. Fawn Ilic (She/Her) is a University of Dundee alumni, having graduated with an MSc and Phd in 2024. Their research previously has explored the quantifiable impact that a lack of diverse resources can have on recognition of dermatological conditions and has an interest in the way overlooked or marginalized groups are depicted in the medical field. Combining traditional art mediums and modern identification tools, she seeks to create informational artwork that is both forward-looking and timeless. When not doing research, she travels full-time in the American West in a converted School Bus.
