Event description
A free and empowering walking tour of the Oxford city centre focused on landmarks of colonialism and current investments in fossil fuels.

About this Event

The Divest and Decolonise tour is back by popular demand and specially coordinated with the GLOBAL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE and, conveniently, Oxford's University Open Day. This is a day it all comes together: please attend the Global Strike from 11am-2pm, and then join us at the Weston Library steps across the street. Prospective Oxford students extra welcome!

Oxford Climate Justice Campaign and Uncomfortable Oxford team up to offer a free walking tour of Oxford's centre, a reflective and critical (but hopeful) look at Oxford's exploitation of people and planet. We focus on Oxford's role in colonialism and its current investments in destructive industries such as fossil fuels and arms. The hour-long tour will make six stops and have ample opportunity for thoughtful discussion on the historical origins of exploitation.

ABOUT US: Uncomfortable Oxford was founded by two Oxford graduate students in 2018, and has led dozens of tours on the city's uncomfortable legacies of inequality.

Oxford Climate Justice Campaign has been calling on the University since 2013 to divest its £3.4b endowment from fossil fuels. We demand that the University heed its researchers and use its cultural and financial power to forward a just transition.

ACCESSIBILITY: Open and free to all. Tour will last about 1 hour, starting at the Weston Library steps on Broad Street and finishing in front of Wadham College. A map of the tour will be posted on the event page. Participants are reminded there is uneven terrain and cobblestones which may hinder accessibility. There will also be a megaphone present on the day and it will likely be loud at times.
