The conference was held on Tuesday 27th November 2018
at the London offices of Allen & Overy.

The DLA Conference 2018: “Challenging Everyday Racism -
Legal and Policy Initiatives” explored current equality and
discrimination issues through the lens of race. Our speakers
interrogated the strategic litigation and policy tools to
challenge racism and the hostile environment for
immigrants.
Jacqueline McKenzie (solicitor at McKenzie,
Beute and Pope), one of our keynote speakers discussed
the lessons learned from representing those affected by
the
hostile environment and Windrush Scandal.
Elizabeth Prochaska’s (Legal Director of Equality and
Human Rights Commission) keynote focussed on the
ECHR enforcement, including a new inquiry on racist
harassment.
Ijeoma Omambala (Old Square Chambers)
delivered our regular Legal Update.

As in previous years, the participants were able to choose
in-depth breakout sessions covering a range of equality
law issues, such as gender identity, disability and how to
use the Equal Treatment Bench Book. The breakout sessions,
led by experienced practitioners, provided practical advice
in relation to particular areas of law or procedure.

Our afternoon panel, chaired by Robin Allen QC of Cloisters
Chambers, focussed on specific approaches to challenging
the hostile environment through immigration law litigation, the
media, campaigning to support the welfare of migrants and
activism. The panel speakers were:
Nicola Burgess (Joint
Council for the Welfare of Immigrants),
Reem Abu-Hayyeh
(MedAct), Peter Kumar (DLA Executive Committee) and
Shoaib M Khan (immigration and human rights solicitor).
