This workshop is designed to introduce the participant to the basic principles of optics and microscopy in a practical, hands-on manner. In a number of experiments, participants will sequentially build the different components of a simple compound microscope, with the aim of gaining a thorough understanding of basic concepts such as image formation, magnification, conjugate planes, image planes, aperture planes and infinity-conjugated optical systems. By adding also an epi-fluorescence module, participants will be familiarized with the basic concepts of fluorescence, including fluorophore spectral properties, chromatic filtering, and multi-channel imaging.
Finally, participants can discover the joy of imaging and use their freshly self-built microscope to create their own multichannel image compositions from a variety of provided samples!
