What does it mean to be a people professional, not just in terms of knowledge, but in terms of integrity, character, behaviour and the ability to draw on our unique expertise to make good judgements?

Recent research by the CIPD on principles-based decision making found fascinating examples of the mismatch between what people felt was the ‘right’ thing to do and what took place.  We will hear about some case studies and consider what we might have done in that situation.

Principles enable us to make good decisions based on a clear purpose. As the world of work evolves, we will encounter more and more situations which are completely new and might not fit under our current policies, processes and rules. Principles trust us to use our situational judgement to make that call, focusing on what we stand for and believe in, which is why they are at the heart of the new CIPD Professional Standards Framework.

This Framework creates clear standards for people professionals at every level, setting out the knowledge and behaviours which will help us to champion better work and working lives in all we do, whether we are dealing with a request for maternity cover; campaigning to change attitudes in flexible working; transforming an organisation’s culture, or looking for ways to develop our unique knowledge and expertise.

In this session, we will discuss:

  • What ethical dilemmas you experience in your people management practice
  • What happens when values collide
  • How we can respond when our professional or personal values are not aligned with organisational values

Building on this we will consider:

  • What it means to be a HR professional in the changing context of work and
  • What skills and behaviours will be needed for the future

This fascinating and participative session will be of value to people professionals across the spectrum of generalists to specialists, at all levels in any size and type of organisation.
