View of Thames Barrier from the Park

Thames Barrier (c) Sue Sinton Smith, 2014

In the 1840s workers at the local Thames Ironworks needed somewhere to live. Houses were built and Canning Town was born. With no drains, roads, gas or pavements it was a grim place to live.  Since then there have been many changes, including large scale re-development after bombing in World War II. Today the builders are back, with luxury apartments being erected and a new neighbourhood being created.

Opened in 1855, Victoria Dock it was the largest area of impounded water in the world, capable of handling steamships. The SS Robin is currently being renovated and, when it is ready will take its place at the heart of the Royal Victoria Dock to complement the other visitor attractions which include luxury yacht hotel Sunborn and the Emirates Airline aka The Cable Car.

With a rich history, Canning Town and its surroundings are changing fast. Excluded from the Docklands Developments Zone, has this enabled the planners to be more imaginative in visualising this area's future?

Meeting point is at the top of the steps, following the 'Matchday Route' signs to exit the station. The walk will finish at Pontoon Dock DLR Station. Duration is 2 hrs approx. Please check travel options at the Transport for London Journey Planner.
