Event description

Description

Docks Heritage Weekend is an annual event run by M Shed, Underfall Yard and, for the first year ever, SS Great Britain. This year, on 30 September and 1 October, we will be offering demonstrations of traditional skills and hands-on activities at each of the venues. A full programme can be viewed here: www.underfallyard.co.uk/event/docks-heritage-weekend/

This year we are offering coach tours to Avonmouth and Royal Portbury. There are limited spaces on the coach tours and they must be booked in advance.

See behind the scenes on a guided coach tour of Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks. Over 95% of all UK imports come to us through the Port but the public cannot usually glimpse this fascinating world that brings us everything we need for daily life.

Avonmouth Dock opened in 1877 and was in direct competition with the City Docks run by the Port of Bristol Authority (PBA). In 1884 the Port of Bristol Authority took over Avonmouth Dock. Containerisation and ever growing vessels led to the construction of a new dock. Royal Portbury Docks opened in 1977. The City Dock, now mostly referred to as the harbour, has been managed by Bristol City Council since the 1980s. Avonmouth and Portbury Docks have been managed by the Bristol Port Company since the 1990s.

There are two coach tours during the day which must be pre-booked. Each tour starts and ends at M Shed. There will be no opportunity to leave the coach during the tour through the Port's operational areas. Toilets available where the tour will begin and end.
