Event description

Description

Join us for our annual celebration of postgraduate research at the University of Brighton. Our lively programme features a range of presentations, competitions and displays, and aims to showcase some of the exciting, important research being undertaken by our doctoral students.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) invites students to present their work in just three minutes, using only one slide. Introduced by Prof Tara Dean, this nail-biting competition will see the judges’ winner take home £400 and go forward to the national 3MT competition where they could win £3, 000. At our local competition, audience members can cast their vote in the People’s Choice prize.

The Opposites Attract Collaboration Challenge (£500 prize) pairs up students from different disciplines and challenges them to work together on a project of their own choosing for seven weeks. The results of those collaborations, whether that be a poster, conference paper, grant proposal or films of AI-generated, sci-fi-esque ‘fever dream re-imaginings of the future’ (last year's winner!), will be presented at the festival.

The Doctoral Inaugural Lectures will see three recent graduates returning to the university to deliver ten-minute presentations of their research.

The student panel discussion will feature current doctoral students and graduates discussing research and research life, offering their personal perspectives and taking questions from the audience.

Research posters and research photos will be on display throughout the festival along with cakes and baked goods from the Bake your Thesis competition. The posters and photos will also be published online in advance of the festival, allowing all members of the university to vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice awards. Our judging panels will assess submissions on the day.

A drinks reception and prize-giving event will close the afternoon.

The Festival of Postgraduate Research is aimed at all doctoral and MRes students, supervisors, research staff and any members of the university interested in seeing the work of postgraduate research students and finding out more about doctoral study at Brighton.
