Doctors and Sexual Violence
Sat 20 May 2017, 10:00 – 16:00 BST
100,000 incidents of sexual violence occur annually in the UK.
11 every hour.
Doctors will invariably encounter disclosures from survivors of sexual violence, particularly in primary care, psychiatry, O&G and A&E. How can we equip ourselves to best help survivors, after both acute and historical disclosures?
Jointly with Oxfordshire Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre (OSARCC) and OUH medical staff, OSWM are hosting an interactive training day for clinical medical students tackling how best to respond when a patient has experienced sexual violence.
• Impact and presentation of sexual violence
• Barriers to survivors disclosing sexual violence
• Barriers to us asking about sexual violence
• Responding to disclosures of sexual violence
• Options, pathways and signposting
In addition to communication skills, we will be covering the relevant medico-legal issues and looking into the specific challenges faced by particularly vulnerable groups of patients.
