Event description
YHP are excited to announce the launch of our documentary series, showcasing the history of African women and Britain's health service

About this event

Since 2018, members of the Young Historians Project have been engaged in a groundbreaking research project, to recover the hidden history of continental African women and the British health service in the 20th century. We have interviewed 36 African women health workers, conducted extensive archive research, and worked hard as a team to convert these materials into accessible learning resources, to be utilised by anyone interested in learning more about this important history.

During this event we will be screening the third and fourth episodes from our documentary series - A Hidden History: African women and the British health service. The first episode to be screened during this event is 'Early Life and Childhood', which will explore the stories of our interviewees, from childhood to adolescence. This episode includes themes of childcare practices, migrating to Britain from the African continent during childhood, culture shocks, experiences in education, and coming of age in British society.

The next episode, 'Fostering', deals with an important and common experience that many West African children living in Britain dealt with during the 20th century - private fostering. This episode provides first hand testimonies and reflections from African women health workers who were either fostered to white families as children, or knew of others who were.

This event will also feature a Q&A with YHP film makers who produced these two episodes, and some of the interviewees who have been featured.
