Description

"Does it matter who funds science?"

An evening conversation with people from across the sciences led by the questions from Hampshire's curious community, such as:

  • Do you trust scientists with your money?

  • Does all research deserve funding?

  • What would you research with £15,000?

  • What do we want the future of science to look like?

... along with all the questions from those participating in our live discussion. Our questions will be taken to all our speakers, who will develop informed and honest answers that will add to our perspectives.

These questions will be addressed from:

  • Gavin Costigan, Director of Public Policy at University of Southampton and former senior civil servant

  • Marika Taylor, Professor of Theoretical Physics at University of Southampton

  • Ailsa Walter, Fundraising Manager for Gift of Sight, a charity funding research into blinding eye diseases

  • Juliette Schuurmans, a medical doctor and PhD student in medical ethics at University of Groningen & University of Southampton

  • Don Spalinger, co-founder of spin out company SPI Lasers and the Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at University of Southampton

We aim to collect a panel of various speakers to represent views on different aspects of how science can be supported. Whether science receives funding from individuals, charities, government, independent companies, or other groups varies hugely across different areas of science and research groups. When groups with specific aims fund science, does it bias the results? And how related does science have to be to our lives to be valuable?

The event will encourage interaction between the panelists, participants and each other to ensure every voice is heard. To facilitate this, we'll have free snacks provided by the venue and interactive exercises allowing us to engage with the topic in a thoughtful way.

These perspectives should inform our responses to questionnaires given at the event's closing, which will allow the British Science Association to collect everyone's thoughts in a report and send this to governmental groups.

Join us @ The Art House for 7:30pm (doors: 7pm) on Saturday 25th of November where we'll discuss your perspective on the future of science.

This event is part of the British Science Association's 'Future Debates' yearly series of events occurring across the UK. This year's debates are on funding in science. Participants will write their perspectives on the topic at these events which will be aggregated into an evaluation report presented to the Chief Medical Officer for England. This report will also inform a future flagship debate in London.

This discussion has been organised by The Science Room, a community science hub operating in Southampton where people's questions are addressed by scientists online and at live events. The event is supported by the British Science Association and Genomics England.
