Pain has become one of the major clinical problems across the world: chronic pain affects at least 1 in 5 people and it's the leading global cause of disability.

One of the reasons chronic pain remains so difficult to understand and treat is that pain is not just a “reflex” - pain is constructed in the brain. The brain doesn’t just read out the signals transmitted from nerves; the brain learns to interpret them based on what it already knows and what it expects.

We will discuss our current understanding of how our brain learns to feel, interpret and regulate pain - and what this practically means for those who fight pain in their lives and how we as clinicians can apply this to help our patients.

Dr Flavia Mancini

Flavia is a neuroscientist, leading the Nox Lab at the Departments of Engineering and Medicine, University of Cambridge. Her research is funded by a Career Development Award from the Medical Research Council with the ultimate research aim being to understand and correct neural computations of pain dynamics to improve the prevention, treatment and management of chronic pain.

Flavia has a distinguished publication record and collaborated with some of the most influential researchers in pain and computational biology. She has recently published a seminal paper in The Journal of Neuroscience that questions long-held beliefs about brain change in pain.
