Event description

Description

Shut the front door, it's happening.

Self-employed parents from across the land are assembling once more for hugs, tea and chat. Whether you're a freelancing newbie, business-owning veteran or are thinking about going it alone since having kids, then come on down.

There'll be informative chatter, inevitable over-sharing and tip-top advice from some super self-employed parents from the Doing It For The Kids community, followed by plenty of time for mingling and getting-to-know-you awkwardness.

Well, hopefully not too much awkwardness — rest assured that I've got a few ideas up my sleeve to help the more anxious among us (myself included!) to feel more at home.

These lovely people have agreed to talk to us for a bit.

*drum roll please*

Steve Folland

Cake addict, video wizard, dad of two and founder of Being Freelance — a podcast where creative freelancers chat about, well, being freelance.

Via his podcast, Steve has had over 100 conversations with freelancers around the world. He’ll be sharing his favourite quotes with the DIFTK crew — helping us to learn from them, smile at them, nod knowingly along to them, and generally shout “YES!” into our tea.

Nicky Raby

Actor, writer, speaker, coach, mum; Nicky is the epitomy of a self-employed parent — a multi-tasking pro.

With many of us working solo (often with no formal colleagues other than our kids) it's easy to lose faith in ourselves and what we're doing. Nicky will be providing us all with a much needed pep talk; helping us to feel more confident and kick that there imposter syndrome in the bum.

Hannah Bullivant

Hannah is an events and interiors stylist, writer and blogger — and can currently be found doing all of the above with a baby on her hip!

Freelance life is inherently unpredictable; throw kids into the mix and it's potential chaos. But what about if both parents are self-employed? Hannah will be sharing her experience of life as a freelancing, creative couple with two kids aged 6 years and 14 months — the perks, the challenges, the possible workarounds.

June Angelides

June is mum to three kids and founder of Mums in Technology, the first child-friendly coding school in the UK.

When it comes to juggling parenting and work, June has done it all — taking maternity leave while still in the corporate world, setting up a business after her second child, and expanding her family as a self-employed parent. I'll be chatting to her about her experiences and what she's learnt along the way.

What's, Where's, When's

Location: Huckletree West, 191 Wood Lane, White City Place, MediaWorks, London W12 7FP

Nearest tube is White City (on the super-speedy Central Line), or Wood Lane (Circle, Hammersmith & City). It's also a ten minute walk from Shepherd's Bush on the London Overground. There isn't any parking available on site but you can park in the Westfield car park about a 10 minute walk away.

Timings: Feel free to arrive from 10am for a brew. Short talks will properly kick off at 10.30am and there'll then be plenty of time for chat and mingling until 12pm.

And Bubble are very kindly providing a few babysitters for older toddlers and pre-schoolers in the Kids Studio while while the event takes place. There'll also be space for up to 5 parents (and babies if you've brought them with you) to stay on in the Kids Studio afterwards for a coworking session. The Kids Studio is a private workspace featuring a play and private nursing area.

So if you're travelling from a bit further afield and want to get some work done at Huckletree West afterwards, then book your ticket here via Eventbrite and then email me at frankie@doingitforthekids.net to book your coworking space. There's only a few spots though so if you can no longer make it, please let me know asap. Thanks!

About Doing It For The Kids

Doing It For The Kids is an online (and increasingly offline) community by and for freelance parents trying to make flexible working work. Whether it’s high fives for securing a new client, commiserations for yet another bout of chickenpox, or collaborating with one another on new projects, products and events — through the collaborative blog, Instagram page, Facebook Group and meetups, DIFTK is proving that all sorts of good shit can happen when freelance parents are given the opportunity to connect.

About Huckletree West

Huckletree West is a child-friendly workspace, located in the heart of White City's creative campus. This is the first Huckletree location with a membership specifically designed for entrepreneurs who are growing their business whilst raising children. Childminder let you down? We get it — it happens. Our membership offers working parents flexibility to use our shared workspace when flying solo, and our Kids Studio when your little one is in tow.

About Bubble
