Event description

Description

Medics against Violence provides training on domestic abuse through our ASC programme for those aiming to train non-specialists (ie those who do not work in the domestic abuse field) who work in professions where they may encounter those suffering abuse and have an opportunity to reach out to them and offer some help and support. Domestic abuse affects 1 in 5 women in their lifespan, it also affects men. Those affected are our patients, our clients, our colleagues and our friends.

Evidence shows that if a trusted professional raises the issue it may encourage those experiencing abuse to take action. The main reason people don't offer help is that they don't know where to start. We can help with that.

We provide training for all health professionals including vets, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and others in a position to reach out to those suffering abuse such as hairdressers.

You do not need prior training or experience of working with domestic abuse.

Our training incorporates elements of bystander training, training on a tried and tested method of encouraging professionals to raise the issue with those they work with, AVDR We aim to increase your awareness and understanding of domestic abuse and to help you to realise the valuable role many professionals in health can play in supporting those experiencing abuse just by following a few simple steps.

Training will be led by Dr Christine Goodall, founder of Medics against Violence, and Inspector Keith Jack from the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit. We have been training health professionals in Scotland on AVDR since 2010.
