About this Event

This training is only for practitioners who work with Lambeth residents. Preference will be given to Lambeth based practitioners.

Dates: 28th January, 23rd April 2020

Time: 9.30am- 4.30pm

This course is designed for practitioners who would like to understand the dynamics of domestic violence within intimate partner and adult familial relationships and improve the service they provide to survivors. The course will examine the myths and realities of domestic violence including considering why people stay in abusive relationships and the barriers to reporting family members and intimate partners. Attending the course will help practitioners recognise indicators of domestic violence, practice asking about domestic violence and effectively provide support to those who have disclosed abuse. The course will end with an overview of understanding risk, safety planning options for survivors and detailed information on specialist support in Lambeth.

Objectives

By attending this course, participants will:

  • understand how domestic violence is defined, what it includes and know its prevalence
  • analyse their own beliefs about domestic violence
  • appreciate and examine the barriers faced by survivors in disclosing and/or leaving an abusive relationship
  • describe indicators of abuse
  • ask the right questions and respond appropriately to disclosures of domestic violence
  • undertake basic safety planning and risk assessment
  • have gained knowledge of Lambeth’s services and be able to refer appropriately
