Domestic Violence Basic Information and Awareness

Course Outline

An entry level course designed to provide an overview of domestic abuse within our society today. Content will include:

  • Defining what we mean by domestic abuse and key indicators to recognizing the range of abusive behaviours, including recent changes in legislation in relation to coercive control.
  • The impact of abuse on individuals and children will be discussed especially in relation to presenting factors and implications for varying client groups.
  • An overview of the local context within Bucks and an outline of current service provision and multi-agency responses will be provided.

This study day aims to raise awareness of the issue in a practical, interactive way.

Learning Outcomes

  • An understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse
  • Ability to define domestic abuse in a range of contexts
  • An understanding of the scope of abusive behaviours within domestic abuse, including coercive control
  • Ability to review the scope and prevalence of domestic abuse within society and in a local context
  • Appreciation of the impacts of abuse on individuals and families
  • Perspective of the multi-agency context of responses to domestic abuse
  • Ability to respond appropriately to those accessing services

Audience

This study day is suitable for all those whose current role brings them in contact with individuals who may have experienced or be experiencing domestic abuse, and who have had little or no previous domestic abuse training.

It is suitable for both frontline practitioners and service managers from agencies across the statutory and voluntary sector including education, health, social care & children’s services, criminal justice sector, substance misuse workers, family intervention teams, youth workers, parenting workers, etc.
