Event Details

Presented by John Bradshaw

Until the beginning of this century, the story of domestication was written by archaeologists.  Then, the DNA sequencing revolution turned everything on its head, pushing back the separation between domestic species and their wild ancestors by thousands of years.  Some the early estimates turned out to be wildly exaggerated, based on faulty assumptions about mutation rates, but even so it has become clear that domestication must have begun long before any tangible evidence was left for us to excavate today.  Indirect evidence from biology and from anthropology has been used to try to fill in the prehistory of our two most popular pets.
