Event description

Description

A one day practical course giving participants an introduction to;

• The ecology of dormice
• The legislation protecting them
• Survey techniques and standards
• Handling and identification
• Interpretation and application of survey results
• Mitigation and habitat management

There will be a special focus on what makes a survey fit for planning/development purposes (or not).

The course will be very much a practical course - it will cover top tips on how to set out survey kit, plenty of opportunities for checking survey kit and a focus on what consultant ecologists often get ‘wrong’ when dormice influence development. Habitat management will also be covered.

This course is intended for; Consultant Ecologists, Local Authority Staff, Park Wardens, Reserve Rangers, Land Managers, Trainees and Volunteers.

Field visits: Etherley Wood and Severell’s Copse

Tutor: Jonathan Bradley

About the tutor

Jonathan Bradley has 30 years experience of ‘earthy’ topics. For fifteen years he has run his own ecological consultancy company in South East England, working with anything from wildflowers to barn owls but specialising in trees, bats and planning regulations. He regularly teaches other professionals and students and has worked with volunteer and conservation organisations as a project leader both in the UK and abroad

Reference

If attendees perform satisfactorilyduring the day they will be issued with a certificate which can be used in lieu of one of your references for a license. Natural England's guidance on this has been evolving over the last year, but we have had written confirmation that we can issue certificates and these can be used as one reference.

As the guidance is in a state of flux we will do our best to let you know if this alters prior to the course, but cannot be responsible for sudden changes in NE's guidance around licensing.

  • 16.00 – 18.00 Field visit to Severell’s Copse to consider habitat management.

Preparation

No preparation for the course is necessary but to get the most out of the course consider reading:
Natural England (2006). Dormouse Conservation Handbook. 2nd edition.
