Event Details

Join us for networking from 5.30pm in the Causerie Suite, enjoy refreshments whilst meeting and catching up with fellow investors, DBA sponsors and the DBA team. The pitch presentations will start at 6.15pm with an introduction from our Chairman, Don McQueen.

Rob Jones, Senior Investment Director, Investec Wealth & Investment, our sponsor partners, will then give a short presentation on the Investec view of 2019 for investors. Rob will talk about how Investec view challenges and opportunities for investors in year ahead.

Five carefully selected companies seeking investment, will make a 15 minute pitch each, after which there is time for Q&A. Then, expressions of interest from Angel Investors are registered for further action. Once the pitch presentations are finished, those staying for dinner, will enjoy a 2 course private meal with wine and a chance to start new conversations and continue those started earlier in the evening.

All five presentations have now been announced, they are as follows...

Pitch 1: Market Sector - Services to IT

At any one instant over 50% of the computers and servers on the planet are idle. With the demand for data storage and computing capacity growing exponentially, there is clearly a gap in the market for someone to introduce companies/individuals with excess server capacity to those who need to install further expensive hardware or have a growing data storage requirement.

This local Company’s platform automatically matches the demands of cloud computing with the hardware resources available on user’s laptops, PC’s, servers or even smart phones. The first beta version was made available in last October and the Company is now seeking £1.5M of investment to develop and expand the system further in preparation for an international roll-out.

Pitch 2: Market Sector - Flood Prevention

This local start-up Company has a patented product which is designed to limit the damage caused by surface water flooding. It is inexpensive to produce and can be easily configured to suit a wide variety of commercial and domestic applications. The present product will prevent floodwater up to a height of 300mm from entering a building. Successful trials in East London have been successful, leading to orders from owners of residential and commercial property.

With the effects of climate change likely to increase the threat of surface water flooding around the world, the Company is now seeking £50K of seed funding to establish the product in the UK market and ultimately expand into major international markets.

Pitch 3: Market Sector - Legal Services

Founded in late 2015, this Company has addressed the long overdue need to revitalise the fragmented, labour intensive, dispute resolution process. Despite being fundamental to every case, incorporating true chronology into a case is both time consuming and expensive. Without this detail however, courts are unable to place any weight on evidence that is presented to them, as open communications are liable to manipulation.

The Company has addressed these problems through its communication tracking and management platform. This produces a continuous, un-editable, intelligent chronology of events, that gives a permanent record of all interaction and document exchanges between two or more individuals, when required. A number of law firms have now signed up and are beta-testing the platform and the founders now seek £100K of investment to address the feedback from these clients and to continue further development.

Pitch 4: Market Sector - Food Manufacturing

Starting with a small table-top oven and a domestic food mixer in 2016, this local food Company has already secured listings with OCADO, Amazon, John Lewis, coffee shop chains and very recently ASDA. T/O at the end of 2018 was circa £200K and the projection for 2019 is £1.3M. They have an enviable reputation in the industry for innovation and quality and have won many awards including SME Innovation of the Year in 2017 by Food Manufacture Magazine. There is now a need for an investment of £400K in both equipment and marketing to meet the above objectives this year.

Pitch 5: Market Sector - Advertising & AI

An early stage conversational marketing platform that helps businesses to use their digital customer conversations as a sales and marketing opportunity. This gives businesses the chance to not only answer customer questions and deal with queries instantly, but to deliver rich, personalised and relevant marketing content via their websites and other social media channels all of which is driven which is driven by machine learning & AI. The founders are seeking a further £125K to complete the current £500K round.

FAQs

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

Under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (as amended 2005) investors must "self-certify" by meeting simple criteria as "high net worth" or "sophisticated" investors. Therefore any investor should read and sign the documentation linked on our About page on our website, either a High Net a worth Investor Certificate or a Sophisticated Investor Certificate, as is appropriate.

We also wish to point out that companies or individuals seeking investment through the Dorset Business Angels must ensure that the information presented to potential investors is neither inaccurate or misleading. They are, accordingly, similarly advised to seek guidance from someone authorised under the Act.
