Event description
Award-winning journalist Daniel Lavelle will talk to the Guardian's Simon Hattenstone about the UK's homelessness crisis.

About this event

Described by David Lammy MP as a “ruthless and raw exposé”, Down and Out is Lavelle’s powerful new book – at once a memoir, an unflinching polemic and a probing investigation into modern homelessness in the UK.

Lavelle left care at the age of 19, and experienced homelessness for the first time not long after – witnessing firsthand the tragically underfunded and neglected state of social services. As he has written recently, homeless deaths have increased by 80% since 2019. In Down and Out, he draws on his own experiences, offers an incisive examination of the complex causes of homelessness, and makes a rallying cry for a fairer, kinder country.

Join him in conversation with the Guardian’s Simon Hattenstone, with whom he worked on the Guardian’s empty doorway series, which aimed to tell the stories of some of the hundreds of homeless people who die every year.
