Down Syndrome - Learning to learn

Ups and Downs Southwest is delighted to offer this training session on including a pupil with Down Syndrome, in school. Aimed at professionals but not exclusive the session with include the learning profile of a pupil with Down Syndrome, reading and managing behavior. Invaluable for any professional and parent/carer who want to learn more about the education we can provide children with Down Syndrome.
9.30am – Registration
10am - “Making It Work” – The aim of this session is to raise awareness of some of the issues faced by pupils with Down syndrome, in schools today, and provide some tips and strategies as to how to best meet their needs. David will go through the aims behind including a pupil with Down syndrome in a mainstream school, detail the specific learning profile associated with DS, how to manage support, and how to differentiate the curriculum (both primary and secondary) to meet their needs effectively.
11.30am-12.30pm - Developing Speech, Language and Literacy – In this session David will provide some practical guidance as to how to encourage a child/young person with Down syndrome to improve their language skills. He will go through evidence-based recommendations for how to teach a child with DS to read, how to overcome barriers to writing, and show that learning to read also impacts on a child’s speech and language development.
12.30pm – Lunch
1.15pm- Managing Behaviour – In this session David will explain that children and young people with Down syndrome are not born with behaviour problems, but that they are more prone to developing them due to the nature of the challenges that they face and often because of the way that they are treated by the adults around them. He will provide some practical tips and advice for managing behaviour.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is parking on site for approximately 25 vehicles with free on road parking close by. The nearest train station is Bridgwater, 4 miles away.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
Should the named delegate be unable to attend we are able to substitute them for another delegate without additional charge but 24 hours prior notice must be given.
What is the refund policy?
You will remain liable for payment of 100% of the course fees for non-attendance on the course , or cancellations within three weeks prior to the course. All cancellations must be made in writing as soon as the applicant is aware that they are unable to attend. Should the named delegate be unable to attend we are able to substitute them for another delegate without additional charge.
