John Garstang of Liverpool University was a pioneer of Turkish archaeology and the founder of the British Institute at Ankara. His book The Land of the Hittites (1910) not only laid the foundations for the entire field of Hittite historical geography, it also played a role in the negotiations that led to the foundation of the Turkish Republic.
