About this event
Dr Charlotte Proudman's new book 'FGM - When Culture and Law Clash' Includes excerpts from first-hand interviews with survivors of FGM and lawmakers who were responsible for designing the law in 1985 and its implementation to the present day. It offers a comparison of the law on FGM and female genital cosmetic surgery and examines FGM Protection Orders which are used in the family courts to prevent FGM.
Dr Proudman will read extracts from her book which critically explores the impact of FGM laws and touches on how racism is an unintended consequence of the law.
Dr Proudman alongside Janey Fyle a Midwife/Policy Advisor, Leethen Bartholomew who is Head of the National FGM Centre, Hoda Ali an End FGM activist and Health Advisor and Joy Clarke, FGM Specialist Midwife will talk after the reading and together will answer questions on the book, their work regarding FGM law in the UK and the feminist movement.
