Description

THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD TWILIGHT SOCIAL WORK SEMINAR

Dr Jo Dillon, Lecturer in Social Work at The University of Sheffield

This seminar will:

-Highlight the legislation that underpins ‘wishes and feelings’ work with children and discuss its interpretation in social work practice;

-Review research findings (both old and recent) regarding our ability to listen to children, record their opinions and enable them to effect change as part of their own child protection planning

-Examine the responses of children aged 8 – 18 years across two of my research studies

-Suggest tweaks within social work practice with children and families that will enable children to understand, and be continuously involved in, the child protection process

-Report on the innovative participatory work taking place in Stockport, where we are coproducing ‘wishes and feelings’ resources with young children

Jo’s short bio:

My passion for participation began whilst working for a youth homeless charity in Blackpool, where young people were fully involved in every aspect of service design and provision. I then moved to Connexions Lancashire, as their county-wide Participation Manager, responsible for embedding the ‘Hear by Right’ framework (National Youth Organisation) throughout the service. This ensured that children were at the heart of the organisation, rather than simply tacked on as an after-thought. I joined the University of Sheffield in April 2019 as a Lecturer in Social Work, following a year as an Associate Lecturer in Social Work at Manchester Metropolitan University. Before academia, I enjoyed many years in social care and social work practice, working in both statutory and voluntary sectors in England and Australia.
