Dr. Johnson and his Love of Books.
Event Information
Description
What led Samuel Johnson to become one of the greatest authors of the 18th century and the Father of the Dictionary? What made him the ideal choice for the job? And why did his friends not want to lend him volumes from their own libraries? Join Celine Luppo McDaid to explore the influence books had on Johnson, and how they shaped his life.
Celine Luppo McDaid has been Curator of Dr. Johnson's House for almost five years, having previously filled other roles within the organisation since 2011. Her interests lie in the Classical influences on Johnson’s work, and Johnson’s lexicographical and linguistic contributions to the field etymology and the evolution of English. She has edited and contributed to several in-house publications, and most recently had an article published in the Bookplate Journal.
Please arrive at the Cloister entrance in Dean's Yard, no later than 17:45 on the day.
The evening consists of a tour of the Abbey, a talk in Poets' Corner and a reception in Cheyneygates with the speaker. Members can book up to four tickets. Places are limited so booking in advance is recomened.
