Dr Johnson lived in 17 Gough Square for 11 years and worked on his famous 1755 Dictionary of the English Language in the attic. His extraordinary four-storey townhouse is set in the maze of courts and alleys, just off Fleet Street.

Discover Johnson's fascinating life and a wealth of original 18th century features - historic paneling, wooden floorboards, a quirky 'cellarette' cupboard, coal holes, and even the original door handles. The front door still has Johnson's anti-burglary devices intact.

The House is opening on Fridays and Saturdays only. First entry is at 11am and the final visit of the day starts at 4pm. Visitors enter by ticket (specifying the date but not a fixed time of arrival) and can view all rooms in the House on a self-guided exploration to soak up the atmosphere. All floors are accessed only via the original open staircase and because of this, we sadly have no step-free access.

Face coverings are requested but not compulsory, hand sanitizer is provided throughout and visitors are advised about conducting safe social distancing inside the house upon arrival.
