Event description
Classical Psychoanalysis and Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP): Comparison and Mutual Enrichment

About this Event

The Hallam Institute of Psychotherapy is proud to present a Webinar with Otto Kernberg who will be speaking live from New York.

Dr Otto Kernberg and Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP)

Otto F. Kernberg, M.D., F.A.P.A., is Director of the Personality Disorders Institute at The New York Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division, and Professor of Psychiatry at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is a Past-President of the International Psychoanalytic Association and a Training and Supervising Analyst of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.

Dr Kernberg is the author of 13 books and co-author of 12 others, including: ‘Borderline Conditions and Pathological Narcissism’; ‘Severe Personality Disorders: Psychotherapeutic Strategies’; ‘Contemporary Controversies in Psychoanalytic Theory, Techniques and their Applications’; ‘The Inseparable Nature of Love and Aggression’; ‘Psychoanalytic Education at the Crossroads’; and, most recently, published in 2018, ‘Resolution of Aggression and Recovery of Eroticism’.

Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is a form of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy specifically developed to treat patients experienced borderline and other personality disorders such as narcissism. Professor Kernberg, alongside his colleagues in New York such as Dr Frank Yeomans, Dr John Clarkin, Dr Eve Caligor and Dr Diana Diamond, drew on over 30 years of clinical experience to address the challenges psychoanalytic psychotherapists faced when attempting to apply their therapy and practice to the treatment of patients experiencing severe personality disorders.

TFP is an object-relations based psychoanalytic model. It has been manualised and there is empirical evidence based on Randomised Controlled Trials that show that TFP is an effective treatment for borderline personality disorder.

Content of the Webinar

Dr Kernberg’s talk will focus on the relationship between TFP and what we might call ‘Classical Psychoanalysis’. There are numerous points of overlap between TFP and other models, particularly Kleinian models. But there are also significant areas of difference at the level of both theory and practice.

Before we hear from Dr Kernberg, who will be speaking to us live from New York, Frank Denning, psychoanalytic psychotherapist and certified TFP teacher and supervisor, will present an overview of TFP, highlighting some key areas that Dr Kernberg will be developing further in his presentation. Frank will then act as discussant with Dr Kernberg when we take questions later in the afternoon.

Frank was the first person in the UK to complete the training and assessment leading to certification as a Teacher and Supervisor of TFP. He is the lead for teaching and supervising TFP in the UK as well as a full-time practising NHS psychotherapist with a long-standing interest in personality disorders.
