Overview

Writing well is a crucial part of your everyday role as a civil servant, where documents like submissions play a critical role in the functioning of government. Writing is more than just articulating an idea, it is the process of thinking, and identifying gaps in our thought process.

This course covers the essential skills, concepts and frameworks for drafting documents required within your role in the Civil Service and builds on the JASPER course as a refresher for established and new civil servants.

Learning outcomes

After completing this topic, you will be able to:

  • Write simply, clearly and succinctly - writing to inform, writing to advise, writing to persuade.
  • Evaluate audience needs and appropriately tailor writing to the target audience.
  • Demonstrate a clearer, more concise, and efficient writing process and style.
  • Identify the discipline in writing, and how a single idea should govern a document.
  • Know how to structure a document so that it engages the reader and conveys critical information clearly and concisely.
