Event Details

Kontakt is a theatrical experiment that blurs the boundary between performer and audience. 20 performers (aged between 12 – 21) and 20 audience members sit across from one another over a bridge table and underneath a single light bulb. What follows is a series of one to one encounters, which can include conversations, drawing, and sometimes dancing.

Created in Wales by Philip Mackenzie for the Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre, Kontakt has since been adapted by theatres throughout the UK and has been hailed as a groundbreaking exploration into how we communicate and learn from one another. Phillip will talk about the project’s success in creating a unique environment where adults and young people can have meaningful interactions, and the power of conversation, charisma, and chance.

Speaker Biog

Phillip Mackenzie’s body of theatre and performance work has been recognised internationally for its innovation and physicality, mixing high culture with popular culture, and has traveled to over 30 countries. In 2007 he was awarded the prestigious Creative Wales Award to travel and continue his research into contemporary European theatre practice and its application to his ongoing theatre work with emerging artists. He joined the Sherman Theatre in 2001 as Director of Youth Theatre/New Artists’ Development and was appointed as Head of Creative Learning in 2009.
