Scenario: Your employee has an appalling absence record and is regularly late arriving at work. He is angry when approached about it informally so you have no choice but to start a formal process. At the formal meeting, he arrives with a representative from MIND who informs you he is there to support the employee who has manic depression.
New CIPD research has found that employers are taking a reactive approach to employees’ mental health issues, when preventative steps make better business sense. Whether it is manic depression or some other form of mental illness, this is an increasingly common problem for employers which can manifest itself in many different ways. As well as the legal issues to grapple with, there are the practical issues of how you manage this employee going forward. It may well be that the employee is underperforming which means that this still needs to be managed, notwithstanding he has a mental illness.
- What do you do?
- How do you respond to particular types of behaviour you may see from someone with a mental illness?
- How do you balance the need to accommodate this person’s particular needs with running your business?
- How should you deal with performance issues – if at all?
We have teamed up with Minding Your Business and Acting out Productions to provide a unique and illuminating workshop which will help you better manage mental health issues in the workplace. The format of the workshop will be interactive, with actors playing the parts of managers and employees.
This workshop is an absolute must for all managers of people, as well as those involved in HR.
