About this event

Arts • Fine Art

Enjoy practicing your landscape drawing skills in this seasonal co-drawing session with Jo Blaker. Be transported to the heather moorlands of Northern England, where in late summer/early autumn expanses of heather bloom en masse. This spectacle, with its exciting, unusual colour palette offers us wonderfully stimulating subject matter to work from. In this 2 hour session we will draw from a variety of reference photographs, in which heather is shown within a wider landscape setting. Expect rocky outcrops, windswept skies and sweeipng vistas.

This session is a great opportunity to:

  • Practice observing and creating TEXTURE
  • Pick up drawing & landscape sketching tips
  • Develop a playful approach to COLOUR
  • LOOSEN UP & ENJOY your drawing more

Structure

We'll start with shorter warm up sketches before gradually increasing the length of our studies. Jo will discuss her choices and method as she works. You will have chance to watch her drawing unfold, but the emphasis is upon drawing together, from a shared reference image.

Materials

You're welcome to work in any media of your choice.

As we want you to have chance to work from several images, materials that enable you to work quite quickly are most suitable. If working with wet media please note loose leaf paper is most suitable.

Colour Palette

In particular we'll be using - warm & cool purples, pinks & greens

Recording

This session will be recorded & you'll have access to the recording for 90 days after the class

About your tutor

Jo Blaker (b. 1983, Huddersfield) is a visual artist whose drawing practice is driven by a love of observation, a playful approach to materials and joy in the sensory experience of mark-making. Whether responding to outer impressions or inner sensations, Jo’s drawings combine expressive gestures with a richly felt sense of texture.

Jo holds an MA in Communication Art & Design from the Royal College of Art and has been a regular contributor to the learning programs at Yorkshire Sculpture Park & the Hepworth Wakefield since 2014.

Jo says

“Drawing enables me to tap into a fully embodied experience. As a life long ‘over thinker’ drawing offers me mental rest - from a busy mind. My workshops and courses help people enjoy a life enhancing relationship with drawing and their creativity. My holistic and playful approach is rooted in 20+ years of creative practice and facilitation. As a neuro-divergent artist I take great pleasure in helping people build their own personal drawing practice that responds to & supports their wellbeing. I’m passionate about helping other people access the calm, joy & connection that I find in the pages of my sketchbook."
