Day of Performative Drawing Workshops, by Draw to Perform
Sat 16 March 2019, 12:00-20:00. Lewisham Arthouse, London
The upcoming workshop day by Draw to Perform will include three bookable workshops about drawing, provided by acclaimed artists and performers. The workshops will explore alternative ways to make marks, draw and express. These workshops will present different strategies for forming a dialogue between drawing, sound, movement, process and performance.
Participants will draw live, share and discuss their outcomes and ideas. All workshops will target different groups and issues in contemporary drawing and will allow artists the opportunity to experience an art form a first hand, work with and be tutored by some of the leading artists in their field.
All workshops do not require prior drawing or performance experience.
Please note Lewisham Arthouse has limited space capacity and workshops have limited numbers of tickets.

Workshop 1 (12:30-14:30) with Echo Morgan
Willow warrior - As a performance artist Echo Morgan keen to make her own outfits. Sometimes they are painted directly onto her own skin, something they are an extended body made out of paper, willow or even metal.
The sculptured expansion of the body makes her appearance more original and personal. When it’s come down to mark making, the extended body offers the artist the sensation of losing control! The resulted painting often surprising and exciting.
In this workshop, Echo invites participants to create their own drawing-suit of amour. Two hours of sketching, sculpting, movement and mark making.
Echo Morgan (Xie Rong) was born in the communist China of the Economic Reforms. She studied at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute High School before moving to London where she gained a BA in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins and a MA in Fine Art at Royal College of Art. Since 2011, She has been collaborating with photographer Jamie Baker on photographic interventions within her performance work. She lives and works in London.
Workshop 2 (15:00-17:00) with Ram Samocha
Mark Some Noise - Directed by Draw to Perform founder and artist, Ram Samocha, this drawing workshop is about back to basic artistic expressions and techniques (such as metalpoint) while learning to draw with unusual and unique materials to create effective marks. The drawing marks that we will create will produce sounds, which we will learn to control and use in our work. The sound component will work as an added layer to the piece. The final exploration is an action filled with high energy and amazing vibe that combining drawing, movement, and sound.
Ram Samocha is a multi-disciplinary artist who currently resides in Brighton, UK. Samocha’s work combines drawing with video, installation, and live performance. Samocha often mixes modern and traditional drawing techniques while searching for new ways to combine between 2D and 3D works. Samocha is the founder of Draw to Perform, an international gathering of artists and theorists involved in drawing performance. Samocha’s work has been recognized nationally and internationally and his work is part of various museums and private collections.

Workshop 3 (17:30-19:30) with Bettina Fun
Exploring monotyping in performance drawing context - Sharing her recent live monotyping practice, Bettina Fung will lead this two hour experimental workshop that will examine ideas of body, space and time, mark making, as well as expanding on what performance documentation could be. This workshop will involve individual and collective monotyping exercises, making prints on different scale and will enable participants to experience incorporating monotyping in performance settings. This workshop will be messy and it is recommended to come in clothes you do not mind getting messy in.
Bettina Fung creates two dimensional, performative and site specific works. Her practice explores what drawing can become and involves the performative aspect of drawing. Bettina often draws in live settings at exhibitions and festivals, hence sharing her process and allowing the work to unfold over time. Bettina’s background is in computer animation. She gained her degree in Bournemouth University (NCCA).

What is drawing performance?
Drawing performance is a stream of performance art in which artists create their artwork in front of a live audience while communicating with the viewers. Mark making in drawing performance is often a result of powerful physical gesture and body movement connecting elements of line, movement, space and time. This exciting art form often combines art, theatre and dance in a vibrant and dynamic way.
Drawing performance is gathering a larger fan base in the UK and its art is becoming more widely collected worldwide.
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
The exciting workshops appeal to all artists, art lovers, drawing fans and students.
What are my transpor/parking options getting to the event?
By train/tube: All trains to New cross or New Cross Gate.
There are no on-site parking facilities near Lewisham Arthouse but there are pay and display bays in the residential streets surrounding the Arthouse.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
There is no need to bring materials for drawing. Materials for all workshops will be provided. No professional cameras please, but photos can be taken with mobile phones.
