About this event

  • 2 hours 30 minutes

This live online workshop takes place via Zoom on Saturday17th August from 2:30pm to 5pm (GMT+1/London time/BST).

***Please note: If you are not able to attend the session 'live', the session will be recorded and made available to you within 48 hours. There is no time limit for completion. Subtitles are available.***

The workshop is suitable for beginners.

A brief summary of the session:

We will first draw a set of simple, botanical motifs. You can choose to trace your motifs from the provided templates, or copy the demonstrated motifs I draw along with you, or work from your own foraged finds: flowers, seedheads, fallen leaves...

We will then construct a circular grid, and use tracing paper to plan and design a single sector of our mandala before transferring it as a repeat design. Finally, we will look at various options for you to colour your finished mandala using a colouring medium of your choice.

Accessing the workshop live

The workshop requires you to use Zoom, a free video conferencing app. Please be prepared to log into the online session 5 minutes before the start.

You will be emailed the Zoom meeting link the day before the session, with a reminder of any equipment needed (see below for the list of required equipment). This information will also be accessible via the Online Event Page.

If you do not receive the email, please check your spam folder and your Eventbrite email preferences in your account settings.

As explained above, if you are not able to attend the session 'live', please be assured that the session will be recorded and made available to you within 48 hours.

Equipment list

Essential:

  1. Drawing compass with pen attachment (any decent compass will do, but I always recommend the Staedtler Mars Comfort 552 quick release compass with pen attachment)
  2. 30cm/12inch ruler
  3. An HB pencil (and a 2B is useful for tracing), sharpener and eraser
  4. A black, coloured or metallic pen for outlining your pattern
  5. Plain A4 or A3 paper for drawing (e.g. cartridge paper, sketchpad)
  6. Tracing paper and a bit of masking (or other low tack) tape
  7. A colouring medium: e.g. felt tips/fineliners/coloured pencils/watercolour paints or pencils

Optional (if you wish to paint your designs):

  1. 300 gsm watercolour paper or pad. A3 is a good size
  2. Watercolour paints, paintbrushes and water

And any other of your favourite art equipment, e.g. metallic pens.

Looking forward to some botanical mandala-making!
