Drawing and Giff Making is a fun and playful way to experiment with character building. Join artist Emma Cousin to learn about the Powdered Toast Man, High Sign and Run Wrake; spend time reflecting on classic cartoons; figure out how to develop unique characters; and begin to create your own visual language.

This workshop provides the initial steps one can take to bring drawing to life. You’ll have the opportunity to build a set of characters, beforecreating storyboards on who these characters are and what they are doing. You’ll explore ways to convey expression and emotion and how that naturally animates or develops a character. Exercises will also look at how drawing can be used to explore meaning-making, what impact repetition has on a form, and which techniques can be honed to better represent what’s in your head.

You’ll quickly build a set of drawings that you can translate into an animated giff.

SIGMA SIGMA SIGMA is a three-month residency programme, led by artist Emma Cousin for Milton Keynes Arts Centre as the fourth instalment of Common Ground 2018-19.

With a focus on professional development for young people and artists living in and around Milton Keynes, Cousin’s February–April residency will offer a free programme of talks, family events and workshops at Milton Keynes Arts Centre, culminating in an exhibition of new work from Saturday 1 April – Saturday 27 April 2019.

Common Ground is a 12 month season of four distinct projects, each presenting high quality and meaningful opportunities for engagement between a diverse spectrum of artists and communities living in Milton Keynes. Working with artists RARA (Youngsook Choi and Kirsti Davies), Tracing the Pathway, (Ashleigh Bowmott, Cara Davies and Tom Eke), Milo Mcloughlin-Greening and Emma Cousin, our projects see artists work directly with our communities to create new works and establish a connected programme of workshops, professional and artistic development, events, talks and exhibitions.
