Sunday 26th June, 11:30am - 5pm (£50 for 1-day course)

Programme

How to draw accurately and in proportion. For the complete beginner or those more advanced who feel they need to improve their drawing skills.

Many people are convinced that to be an artist you must be born with natural talent. It’s a total myth!

You already know that whatever we do in life, we have to learn to do it – learning to write is a good example, or riding a bike, or playing a sport.

Signing-up to this day’s course you will be taught how to measure using the ‘thumb-and-pencil’ method. This is the best method for measuring. The principle you can learn in a few hours, then it’s practice, but practice you will enjoy because you will know how to draw accurately so you can achieve correct proportions. This basic skill is essential if you are to progress in art. Drawing and painting demand it. Once you learn some basics skills, it will give you enormous freedom as an artist. You will be able to sketch the world around you, from simple sketching to a finished drawing, or painting. And it’s worth noting, all the great artists over the last 500 years had one thing in common: They knew how to draw accurately.

Often, even people who may have been painting for a number of years, have not been taught basic drawing techniques, for example: how to measure and achieve correct proportions.

I will teach you how to measure up a subject to ensure you draw it accurately. You will also be introduced to charcoal so that you can learn tonal values. It is tone that gives shape to objects, working from a still-life you can easily set-up on table at home. This will allow you to learn at your own pace in order to gain confidence in basic drawing skills.

The main points covered on the two lessons will be:

• Introduction on how to measure accurately.

• Using charcoal to achieve tone.

• How to solve problems of perspective, through measuring.
