Event description

Description

Until the turn of the twentieth century drawing from the ‘antique’ – a canonical group of classical statues that provided ideal exemplars of artistic achievement - formed a core component of every art students training.

Drawing from the antique has all but disappeared from the modern art school curriculum but drawing from classical casts can still be a useful activity when learning to draw and paint from life; not only are they beautiful objects in their own right, their formal complexity and subtlety make for very challenging and fascinating subject matter.

This short course will use as it’s starting point the classical casts dotted around Heatherley’s School of Art and students can opt to make either drawings or paintings.

About your tutor: Paul Handley was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire in 1964, where he continues to live and work. He received my initial artistic training at the Norwich School of Art, where he studied for a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art Painting. He completed an Art Teachers Certificate at Goldsmiths College University of London and an MA in Art History at the Winchester School of Art and the OU. He has taught art and art history in a range of educational settings from schools and colleges to art schools and universities. He was initially elected a member of the NEAC in 1997.

Materials to bring: Students should bring basic drawing materials including 2B pencils, hard rubber, putty rubber, blade/scalpel or other sharpener, scene painters charcoal, fixative, masking tape, good quality cartridge paper and or a sketchbook. A basic watercolour set might also be useful if students wish to produce wash drawings. Students need not bring everything on the list, just only those that are likely to use.

There is a materials shop on site if required.

There are tea and coffee making facilities on site and cafes nearby - but you might want to bring a packed lunch.

Cost: £60.00 (+ booking fee) for the day

There is a 10% discount for Friends of the New English and students with an appropriate student number booking online. If you are a student you will be asked to provide your Student ID at the workshop. If you are eligible for a discount please email classes@neac.co.uk stating which discount you are eligible for and you will be emailed a special code to use when booking your tickets.
