About the Artist

Andrew is a self-taught artist, originally from Honley near Holmfirth, and now living in North Wales.

In 2012 he was shortlisted for ‘Artist of the Year’ by Artist & Illustrators magazine. He is an invited artist at Holmfirth Artweek and has exhibited work at the Royal Cambrian Academy Open (Wales) and Grosvenor Open (Chester) exhibitions.

Andrew teaches regular watercolour classes in North Wales, and has demonstrated watercolour painting to art societies throughout the UK. He was Head Tutor at North Light Gallery Art School in Huddersfield until his move to Wales in 2010.

Andrew is a member of the Huddersfield Art Society.

Materials Required

1. Watercolour brushes – a large wash brush (eg. at least size 12) and a few smaller brushes for detail

2. Pencils (HB, 2B), sharpener & putty rubber

3. Watercolour paints – I normally use Winsor & Newton paints. My usual pigments are French Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Lemon and Cadmium Yellow, but these pigments are not essential.

4. Watercolour paper – I recommend Bockingford 200lb/425gsm ‘NOT’ (which means not hot-pressed HP), although feel free to experiment with different textures (‘NOT’, Rough or HP) and different weights of paper (generally the heavier the better).

5. Palette

6. Waterpots

7. Mist-sprayer (the type used to water plants).

Calder Art will provide the following materials for the workshop:

Table Top Easel

MDF Board in various sizes

Paint Pot

Masking Tape and other sundry products are also available.
