  Dress Making Course Outline

4 Weeks This is a beginner’s dressmaking class so no experience of dressmaking is required, but you do need to know how to use a sewing machine.

We will expect you to of taken the Beginners sewing course or be at an equivalent standard.

During the course, you will learn how to use and understand commercial patterns - we will start with a skirt, covering darts, waistbands, zips and hems. We also make a top covering bust darts, facings and setting in sleeves. We use 2 commercial patterns. You will be emailed the pattern numbers once you have booked.

You to will need to bring fabric and trims, as follows: SKIRT One and a half metres of fabric for the skirt such as, medium weight cotton twill, denim or linen, a 8" zip and 1.2mm button. TOP one and a half metres for the top in a light weight cotton.

Only 4 places per course.

Week 1&2: Learn how to take your measurements, how to read and cut out a pattern and alter the length if necessary, how to pin the pattern accurately on the fabric. You will then learn how to insert a zip and construct the skirt, finishing the seams with zig zag stitches. Learn how to attach a waistband, how to hem and how to sew button and button holes.

Week 3&4: Make a top, learning how to sew bust darts, sew a facing, and how to attache a sleeve. After measuring the pattern, you will cut out and make your garment in a fabric of your own choice.

You will need

For the skirt, 1.5 to 2meters of medium weight cotton twill, denim or linen, a 8" zip and  a 1.2mm button to match.

For the top, 1.5 to 2meters of light /medium weight cotton.
