Review:

Daria Price’s documentary follows the ignominious collapse of one of America’s oldest commercial art galleries: the (in)famous M. Knoedler & Co., founded in 1846, closed in 2011. The story begins with Domenico De Sole – erstwhile CEO of Gucci, and co-founder of Tom Ford International. He was enquiring at Knoedler for a work by Sean Scully, and met with the gallery’s esteemed president, Ann Freedman. They didn’t have any work by Scully at that moment, but she did have a painting by Mark Rothko, which De Soles quickly coughed up $8.3 million for. Several years later, it emerged that it was a fake.

So begins an investigation deep into Knoedler’s practices and contacts. More fakes are uncovered and the reputation of the gallery soon begins to buckle. But who is to blame? Ann Freedman is singled out first, but what of her mysterious supplier – supposedly an anonymous Swiss gentleman, and his amiable representative in the States? As the plot thickens, so do considerations on art more generally, Price exploring what it means to fake an artwork, what it means to buy one, and how the art market has created a stage for the (not so) perfect crime. A gripping documentary that delves deep into this previously unseen world. / Review by Milo Garner
