About this event

We are on the cusp of a revolution in the transportation sector, driven by the significant progress on electric powertrains, and robotics and autonomous systems. Electric vehicles are rapidly taking over and we can expect drones to be inundating UK Skies in the coming years. Novel air vehicles, such as drones or larger eVTOL vehicles, will introduce entirely new noise sources. They will bring unconventional noise signatures (i.e., tonal and high frequency dominated) that does not resemble conventional aircraft, and will operate over urban communities not usually exposed to aircraft noise.

Due to all the above, drone noise might become an important source of concern, and could put at risk the wider adoption of these technologies. This talk will overview the state-of-the-art of methods and tools for assessing human response to these new air vehicles. Specifically, it will focus on: Metrics for noise assessment, design tools and regulation for certification and operation. A new approach for addressing noise issues of novel air vehicles based on Perception-driven Engineering will be proposed and described.

Dr Antonio Torija-Martinez has extensive experience in aircraft noise modelling and noise assessment of novel aerial vehicles. Also, in psychoacoustics and bridging the gap between engineering and noise perception. He has published +35 papers in top leading peer-reviewed journals, including Nature. He has been a recipient of a Marie Curie EU Postdoctoral Fellowship (ref: 246550). He is member of NASA Urban Air Mobility Noise Working Group, and contributor to NASA white paper on UAM noise.

Dr Torija-Martinez is currently the PI of the IUK project InCEPTion (ref. 73692) and EPSRC project DroneNoise (EP/V031848/1). He is member of the Joint ISO/TC 20/SC 16 - ISO/TC 43/SC 1 WG: Noise measurements for UAS (Unmanned Aircraft systems).

Organiser of Drone Noise: The Next Public Health Challenge?

The Noise and Vibration Engineering Group comprises members of the Institute of Acoustics with a particular interest in assessment and control of noise and vibration. The aim of the group is to provide a forum for members to exchange information and discuss developments within this general field of interest, including engineering methods for noise and vibration control, workplace noise or NVH assessment, low noise design, source identification methods, source mechanisms and prediction methods. The NVEG committee organises events of interest to the membership, issues regular communications and represent members’ interests within the IoA and on relevant external bodies.
