About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Drones are revolutionising biodiversity and habitat monitoring by providing rapid, high-resolution, and cost-effective data collection across diverse and often inaccessible ecosystems.

This event brings together leading ecologists and drone technology specialists to share cutting-edge applications, methodologies, and case studies demonstrating how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)are transforming ecological data collection, habitat monitoring, and species tracking.

The presentations will be recorded and shared with those who booked via a password-protected website following the event.

Speaker Programme

This event will feature four presentations, each followed by Q&A sessions. This event will feature 4 speakers:

  1. Drone-Based Thermal Imaging for Bat Roost Surveys with Clara Gonzalez-Hernandez MCIEEM (Co-ecology)

Drone-Based Thermal Imaging for Bat Roost Surveys

Clara Gonzalez-Hernandez MCIEEM (Co-ecology)

This presentation explores the practical deployment of drones equipped with thermal imaging to identify bat roosting locations in complex structures. Drawing on field trials from the BATS (Bats and Aerial Thermal Survey) protocol, it covers key considerations including drone and sensor selection, site suitability, optimal flight positioning, and efficient workflows to minimise battery changes and survey time. The session will also highlight how combining aerial footage with automated video analysis enhances detection accuracy while reducing surveyor effort and post-processing time. Practical insights will be shared to support ecologists in adopting this innovative approach responsibly and effectively.

Clara Gonzalez-Hernandez MCIEEM is an ecologist with 10 years' experience in consultancy and since May 2024 has been using drones with a thermal payload to survey bat roosts in buildings.

Organised by

The Biological Recording Company provide a range of events focused on educating and training biological recorders and biodiversity professionals in the United Kingdom.

  • entoLIVE Webinars are free 1-hour virtual events exploring the science of insects and other invertebrates. Each webinar will feature an invertebrate scientist and are suitable for adults of all abilities – a passion for invertebrates is all that’s required!
  • Virtual Symposiums explore a subject in more detail through a series of talks from subject experts. These longer events have a small charge and are often available with an 'earlybird' discount.
  • Field Recorder Days are 1-day events where experienced and novice recorders come together to record the wildlife of a site. Records are generally collated through iRecord and shared with the site manager, Local Environmental Record Centre and relevant National Recording Schemes/Societies.
  • Earthworm Training Courses cover topics such as biology, ecology, sampling techniques and identification.
