Event description

Description

Learn how to make and use an upcycled drop spindle to create your own yarn from scrap textiles.

Spinning is an ancient craft, thousands of years ago if people wanted clothing they grew plants then used plant fibres to spin yarn to make their own material. Now we can get hold of anything whenever we want.

This fun and engaging workshop will make a connection to these ancient skills, by repurposing modern materials that may otherwise go to landfill.

We will introduce you to the history and principles of drop spinning, you will make a spindle out of items you would easily have to hand at home. You will learn how to prepare and spin yarn - reusing materials such as clothing or linens that have outlived their original use. You will come away with a skein of yarn to knit or crochet or weave, a new technique and knowledge.

Tutors : Lisa Pidgeon of Little Bird SOS and Janet Currie, project coordinator.

What's Included: All materials, instruction sheets, refreshments and home made cake.

Venue: We are hosting this workshop in a well equipped community hut on local allotments, with access to green space and outdoor garden sitting areas. Accessible loo. Full details provided upon booking.
