We’re delighted to be welcoming back to the workshop this winter blues loving guitar makers Tom Drummond and Pat Hammett of Drummond & Hammett to lead a special one day workshop to craft your own traditional cigar box blues guitar.
The grand-daddies of the delta blues Blind Willie Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Jimi Hendrix and Hound Dog Taylor (to name but a few) founded the movement on homemade instruments, and thus spawned ‘the blues’ from a time of hardship and economic depression. Today musicians like Seasick Steve and Jack White are keeping the cigar box guitar tradition alive.
Over the course of the day and under the guidance of Tom & Pat, you’ll assemble your components, sand and file your f-holes, attach the fret neck, fit tuning pegs, drill holes for piezo pickup and bring it all together to create an instrument you’ll never want to be parted from.
The beauty of the cigar box guitar is that they strip your playing back to the bare bones, allowing you to focus on rhythm & melody and to experiment with ‘open tunings’ – the way blues was meant. D, D-minor, G, G6, C6, E5…. There are many to try and each gives you a slightly different feel whether your preference is Delta, Hawaiian, Old Time, Rag Time, Boogie-Woogie, Roots, Hobo – the limit is your depth of experimentation.
Tom & Pat started out as enthusiasts, with a love for the design & crudeness of the cigar box guitar, experimenting with different boxes, and the resonance of different timbers. They now sell their custom made guitars directly from their Bristol workshop. Visit www.drummondandhammett.com to discover more and get inspired!
