Event description

Description

Drypoint is a print process where lines or marks are scratched or inscribed into a surface which is then printed from. It is usually by the intaglio method, where the incisions are filled with ink and printed from, rather than the relief method which prints from the surface.

On this one day class you will make a series of prints using the drypoint technique. You will learn how to use tools, inks and printing presses to make progressively more complex prints. At the end of the session you should have a series of similar, but increasingly more complex, prints. This progressive change will allow you the opportunity to become familiar with the various stages of the process.

What experience do I need?

This one day workshop would be suitable for an absolute beginner or someone who wants to remind themselves a process they enjoyed in the past.

What will I make?

You will make a series of progressively different prints using one to four A5 printing plates, printed onto A4 paper. Usually you would expect to make 10 or more variations in a class of this length.

Who is my tutor?

Mick Welbourn is currently the manager of the printmaking workshops of Leeds College of Art, where he has worked for more than twenty years. Mick was selected for inclusion in the Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition in 2011. In 2013 he finished his MFA at Leeds University where he was the recipient of the Wilhelmina Barnes Graham Printmaking Scholarship. Mick has recently been on a printmaking residency to San Antonio in Texas. He is a founding co-operative member of Leeds Print Workshop.

Do I need to bring anything?

All the inks, papers, tools and equipment needed to make drypoints will be provided by Leeds Print Workshop. This will include oils, intaglio inks, rollers, plastic drypoint plates, and paper to print on. We will provide aprons, but you can bring your own if you like!

Students can bring sketchbooks, shapes, patterns or other images for inspiration as well as come up with ideas on the day of the workshop. Simple abstract shapes and more figurative imagery work equally well for drypoint plates.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no later than 7 days before the workshop. For cancellations after this period there will be no refunds issued.
